The Illinois Press Foundation, Capitol News Illinois and Southern Illinois University's Charlotte Thompson Suhler School of Journalism and Advertising are launching a collaborative nonprofit news initiative for the lower third of the state, the organizations announced.
The effort, called Southern Illinois Source, is described as a solutions-focused journalism project aimed at amplifying the voices, experiences and communities of southern Illinois.
According to Capitol News Illinois, SI Source is distributed on behalf of the initiative, which the news service runs in partnership with SIU's journalism and advertising school. The reporting on the launch is a publishing collaboration with the Gateway Journalism Review, with Alee Quick reporting for the review.
Capitol News Illinois says it is a nonprofit, nonpartisan news service covering state government that is distributed to hundreds of print and broadcast outlets statewide. It says it is funded primarily by the Illinois Press Foundation and the Robert R. McCormick Foundation, along with contributions from the Illinois Broadcasters Foundation and Southern Illinois Editorial Association.
