Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs will announce the latest round of Charitable Trust grants for nonprofits across the state during a news conference Tuesday, Oct. 20, at 11:30 a.m. at Synapse House, 3130 Finley Rd., Suite 520, in Downers Grove, according to a media advisory from the treasurer's office.
The event will focus on Synapse House, a nonprofit that the advisory says empowers individuals impacted by brain injury, stroke and neurological conditions. The program provides supportive services, employment aid, fitness classes, veteran services and more, according to the office.
Synapse House is among 10 small nonprofits across Illinois receiving grants in this round, the advisory says. The treasurer's office said the Charitable Trust program helps organizations serve people in need by providing housing, food, and workforce and economic development assistance.
The latest 10 recipients are located in Champaign, Charleston, Chicago, Downers Grove, Murphysboro, West Frankfort and Westmont, according to the advisory.
Frerichs, Synapse House leaders and local elected officials are scheduled to attend. The office said video will be posted at cms.illinois.gov.
Background
According to the treasurer's office website, the Charitable Trust Stabilization Fund assists small nonprofits with annual budgets of $1 million or less and at least one full-time employee. The office says money in the fund comes from fees that not-for-profit corporations pay when they file annual reports with the Illinois Secretary of State, not from personal or property tax dollars. The maximum award is $20,000 per organization.
The treasurer's office website says that since the program's launch, it has awarded $5.4 million through 271 grants to 215 charitable organizations in 77 cities across Illinois.
