The Illinois Department of Transportation is hosting three free virtual workshops in November as part of its continuing Building Blocks of Success series for Disadvantaged Business Enterprise, or DBE, firms, the agency announced.

The workshops are aimed at firms interested in strengthening their skills, growing their business and bidding on state projects. New and existing DBEs, as well as firms interested in becoming certified in the program, are invited to take part, IDOT said.

November workshop schedule

All sessions run from 10 a.m. to noon:

  • Nov. 5 โ€” How to Destroy Your Credit in 90 Seconds, and How to Rebuild It
  • Nov. 12 โ€” Overhead Rate Calculation
  • Nov. 19 โ€” My First Date: What to Know When Preparing Your Loan

Background

According to IDOT's website, the DBE program is federally mandated under federal regulations and provides minorities, women and other eligible small businesses the opportunity to participate in transportation contracts that use federal funds. The department says the program is administered in Illinois through the Illinois Unified Certification Program, a "one-stop" certification process that also includes the city of Chicago, the Chicago Transit Authority, Metra and Pace.

IDOT says more information on becoming a certified DBE and on available resources is available on its website at www.idot.illinois.gov/dbe.
